Jean and Scott : Ch. 2: 'It felt Right'

uh oh default
This felt right.. Jean thought as a cool late spring breeze blew against her face in the outdoor cafe she sat in front of. She took a sip of her drink and took a deep sigh, taking in all the smells and sounds of Manhattan.

"I missed this..." She sighed, blinking against the bright sun in her eyes. She had turned off her telepathy they best to her ability as she felt her mind wandering to whether she would see a certain someone, and whether that was a good idea or not.

Scott had gotten the e-mail, and he couldn't believe that he was hesitating to see her. A very loud voice in the back of his head was telling he was crazy to even second guess it! Just go! But the more sensible side of him said he should be cautious. Still...what could it hurt to go?

He arrived and although there was something...different, he still knew it was her. He approached the table, and stood beside her. "Jean?"

Jean's hair wasn't red at the moment. She'd put a brown wash in it, but she knew deep inside, Scott would recognize her. She looked up and saw him.

The last time she saw him was that horrible day at Alkai Lake. He looked so handsome. She swallowed what little was in her mouth and spoke in a low voice. "Scott."

Standing up at eye level, she repeated, "Scott."

"Jean," he repeated in an almost whisper. There was no doubt about it, it was her. Her hair wasn't firey red anymore, and he wasn't sure exactly how he felt about that, but there was no mistaking it was her. "Jean," he said again, before finally making his arms move to give her a hug. It was sort of a tentative, shy hug but a hug never the less. "It's really you."

Jean jerked as he brought her into a hug, stiffening for a moment as he hugged her. She so wanted to melt into those arms and forget what had happened the past couple years, but she could not. She never could.

She pulled away and looked at him. "It's me." she sent him. "I... I don't know if I should even be here." She admitted out loud.

Scott felt the jerk and was a bit confused and a little hurt. He knew that she was uneasy, and still upset about what happened, but he couldn't hug her?

"No, Jean," he said, taking her hand. "Please, I need to see you. I need to know that you're alright, and what happened? Where have you been?" He had a hundred questions he wanted to ask her.

"I... I'm trying to keep my telepathy off, but I am failing." She sent and spoke. "I don't mean to confuse you, Scott. I am so scared of hurting you. Can we please just take this as slow as possible?"

She lead him to sit across from her, slowly wedging out her hand and placing it on her lap. "It took so much for me to even call you. I just want to return home, but we both know it's not that easy."

Scott's heart didn't want to go slow. He wanted her back, her wanted to her to come home and he wanted to pretend like nothing was different. But, his head, the part of him that Scott tended to listen to more, agreed with her. He nodded, and sat down across from her.

"I don't quite understand all of this," he said. "But, I'll do whatever I can, whatever you need me to to help you. If you need something, I'll get it. If you want me to just go away and leave you alone...it will be hard, but I'll do it."
